XM WebTrader: Trade Without Installing MT4 or MT5

XM WebTrader is the browser-based version of MT4 and MT5 that runs directly in Chrome, Firefox, or any modern browser — no download required. It connects to the same accounts as the desktop platform. Here's how to access it and when it's the right tool to use.

📋 Quick Facts — XM WebTrader

  • No download or installation required — runs in any browser
  • Available for both MT4 WebTrader and MT5 WebTrader
  • Connects to your existing XM account — same number, password, server
  • Supports charting, indicators, and all standard order types
  • Expert Advisors (EAs) cannot run in WebTrader
  • Useful for trading from a computer where you can't install software
  • Session closes when you close the browser tab

How to Access XM WebTrader

1

Go to xm.com

Navigate to the XM website and go to the Platforms section in the main navigation.

2

Select WebTrader (MT4 or MT5)

Choose whether you want the MT4 or MT5 WebTrader — this must match the platform your account was opened on. MT4 accounts cannot log into MT5 WebTrader and vice versa.

3

Log In with Your Account Credentials

Enter your numeric account number (not email), password, and select the correct server from the dropdown. Server name is in your XM welcome email.

4

The Platform Loads in Your Browser

WebTrader opens directly in the browser tab — charts, Market Watch, and the order panel are all accessible without any additional plugins.

What You Can (and Can't) Do in WebTrader

✅ WebTrader supports

  • ➕ Opening and closing market orders
  • ➕ Setting stop loss and take profit
  • ➕ Pending orders (limit, stop)
  • ➕ Charting with multiple timeframes
  • ➕ Built-in technical indicators
  • ➕ Viewing trade history
  • ➕ Multiple instrument monitoring via Market Watch

✗ Not available in WebTrader

  • ✗ Expert Advisors (automated trading)
  • ✗ Custom indicators requiring .ex4/.ex5 files
  • ✗ Multi-monitor setups with persistent layouts
  • ✗ Full MQL5 scripting environment
  • ✗ Platform runs only while browser tab is open
🚨 EAs Cannot Run in WebTraderIf you use Expert Advisors (automated trading bots or strategies), WebTrader is not an option — EAs require the locally installed desktop MT4 or MT5. The desktop platform can run EAs continuously even with the chart minimized, whereas WebTrader stops completely when the browser closes.

WebTrader vs Desktop MT4/MT5 vs XM App

WebTrader occupies a specific role in the XM platform lineup — it fills the gap when you need to trade from a device where you can't or don't want to install software. For most regular trading, the desktop platform offers a more capable charting environment, while the XM App provides the best mobile trading experience.

The practical use case for WebTrader: you're traveling, at someone else's computer, or on a work machine where software installation isn't allowed — and you need to check or close a position. In those situations, WebTrader handles the task cleanly without leaving anything installed on the device.

ℹ️ Security on Shared ComputersWhen using WebTrader from a shared or public computer, always log out completely when done, avoid saving passwords in the browser, and make sure no positions stay open unmonitored. The WebTrader session is browser-based and can be accessed by anyone who opens that browser's history if you don't log out properly.

Frequently Asked Questions — XM WebTrader

What is XM WebTrader? +
XM WebTrader is a browser-based version of MT4 or MT5 that lets you trade directly from any web browser without downloading or installing any software. It connects to the same XM trading accounts as the desktop platform — you use the same account number, password, and server to log in.
How do I access XM WebTrader? +
Go to the XM website (xm.com), navigate to the Platforms section, and click on WebTrader. Log in using your MT4/MT5 account number, password, and the correct server name (found in your welcome email). The platform opens directly in your browser with no download required.
Is XM WebTrader the same as MT4/MT5 desktop? +
WebTrader covers the core trading functions — opening/closing positions, charting, indicators, and order types — but it has fewer advanced features than the desktop version. Expert Advisors (EAs) cannot run in WebTrader since they require a locally installed platform. If you use automated trading or need advanced analysis tools, the desktop version is more capable.
Can I use XM WebTrader on a public or shared computer safely? +
You can use WebTrader from a shared computer since it doesn't install anything. However, always log out completely after your session, don't save passwords in the browser, and avoid leaving positions open when using a device that others also access. Two-factor authentication on your Members Area adds an extra layer of security.
Does XM WebTrader support Expert Advisors (EAs)? +
No. Expert Advisors require the locally installed desktop version of MT4 or MT5 to run continuously. WebTrader is a manual trading platform — automated strategies cannot be executed through it.
Is there a difference between XM WebTrader MT4 and MT5? +
Yes. WebTrader MT4 and MT5 connect to their respective account types — your MT4 account can only be accessed through the MT4 WebTrader, and MT5 accounts through MT5 WebTrader. The MT5 version generally has more timeframes and order types available, matching the capabilities of each underlying platform.

A Practical Backup, Not a Primary Platform

WebTrader is best understood as a reliable fallback — useful in specific situations, not as a replacement for the desktop platform for day-to-day trading. If you haven't already, installing MT5 on your primary device gives you a more complete trading environment for regular use.
